Who We Are
Nardine was established in 1974 and is the longest, continuously operating women’s refuge in Australia. We provide short term crisis accommodation and medium term transitional supported accommodation for women and their children escaping family and domestic violence.
Nardine Refuge (known as ‘Nardine’) began and continues as a committed feminist organisation and works with family and domestic violence survivors, lobbies for social change and the elimination of all forms of violence and abuse towards women and children.
The term ‘wimmins’ embodies the 1970’s feminist history of Nardine whereby feminists adopted the word to avoid the use of the suffix ‘men’.
Nardine acknowledges our feminist roots however also believes family and domestic violence is a societal issue, a community concern, whereby men have a role to play in the community towards the prevention of abuse perpetrated to women and children by demonstrating positive male role models.
